Dog Breeds - Siberian Husky

Return to Breed List

The Siberian husky comes in a variety of patterns and colors. They typically have white on the paws, tail tip and markings on their face. Probably the most popular color combination is black and white, with grey and white and red and white colors following closely behind in popularity. Though they have a very wolf like appearance, they are not related to the wolf. Their coat is quite thick, much thicker then most dog breeds, and sheds twice a year. Siberian Huskies also have many different eye colors. The most distinctive eye color is pale blue, but they can have brown, hazel, or they can even be bi-eyed, with two different colors!

Though their beautiful wolf-like appearance may seem threatening to some, Siberian huskies do not make good guard dogs. They are very curious and friendly towards people and do not bark a lot, and therefore are not good at alerting their owner of people approaching. Siberian Huskies are very intelligent, but intelligence does not always translate to easy to train! In fact, Siberian huskies can be quite stubborn and are not as eager to please as many other dog breeds. They can be trained with a great deal of patience and rewards. Siberian Huskies should never be left to run off leash, unless in a secure, fenced yard. If they are able to, they will run for very long distances, and unfortunately they are not the best at finding their way home! It is highly recommended that Siberian Husky owners microchip their pet for permanent identification. They are also great escape artists that are able to dig their way out of a fenced yard, so much care must be taken to ensure that the yard is secure!

Food is scarce where the Siberian husky breed originated, which has overtime given them a very strong prey drive. Their natural instincts urge them to chase small animals such as cats, rabbits, squirrels, etc, and therefore they should be socialized with smaller animals from a young age to be taught that the small animals are not lunch! Siberian Huskies can do well in a house with cats provided they are socialized from a young age. Most are also great with children if they are trained properly, but like with all dogs they should be well supervised around young children.

I just want to thank you for your fast friendly service. Honestly, I was not sure how this whole pet insurance thing was going to work out but I am sure glad that I got it. Recently my puppy had severe digestive bloat from getting into some food. I rushed to the emergency vet and racked up a nice bill of $234.30. Thank goodness that my little "Rosa" was okay. I sent my claim to you and you sent me the cheque in full within a week. I am so glad that I have insurance for both my dogs. Thanks PetCare I really appreciate it. I tell all my friends that you are the best pet insurance on the market... I have proof!
